Chinese Steamed Fish

This piece reflects my Chinese American heritage by combining the traditional steamed fish, a symbol of luck in Chinese culture, with bright, nontraditional melamine plates common in Chinese American restaurants.

Steamed fish is a beloved dish with origins from Cantonese cuisine, particularly in the Guangdong province. This dish is enjoyed all over China, becoming a staple in restaurants and households. Often served in celebrations such as Chinese New Year, where a whole fish, from head to tail, symbolizes an abundance of luck from the start of the year to the end.

The plate represents my connection to my Chinese American heritage. The melamine plate is a staple in Chinese American households and has become an iconic symbol seen in Chinese restaurants all over America. Unlike fine porcelain, this plate is factory-made. It is durable and practical, and has been ingrained in Chinese American culture throughout the years.

The wide variety of colors represents jade, a stone embedded in Chinese culture for over 7,000 years. From jade bracelets to earrings, it symbolizes wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune.

Behind the Scenes

I knew I wanted to create a piece that reflected my Chinese American heritage. I chose fish as the central subject because it is a dish I grew up eating frequently and holds personal and cultural significance.

Ideas I wanted to explore:

  • Representing both my Chinese and American identities

  • Using unconventional plates to reflect my American influences

  • Drawing from the silver tones of the fish and the vibrant colors found in Chinese jade
